Coach Noza's Library | Start, by Jon Acuff

I AM AN AVID READER. SO WHY NOT SHARE WHAT I HAVE BEEN READING WITH EVERYONE. EVERY OTHER WEEK I HOPE TO GIVE A QUICK SUMMARY OF WHAT I AM CURRENTLY READING. I HOPE YOU JOIN IN!

In Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average and Do Work That Matters, Jon Acuff encourages his readers to begin. This is kind of a sequel to his book Quitter, in which he talks about quitting a job that you feel stuck in, not passionate about or that makes you hate what you have become. Start brings to life the idea that all of us have ideas that we are passionate about. We all have something that makes us say, “It would be really cool if…”

So why not start right now.

Some people have the luxury to quit a job and start something new. Others of us are constrained financially that quitting a job would mean not being able to pay bills. But Acuff does talk about how we can apply his principles while keeping our day job.

One of my favorite excerpts is about shaping our expectations for what we want to do:

I learned a simple lesson about being awesome: always play to the size of your heart, not to the size of your audience. Awesome doesn’t let the crowd determine the size of the performance. Awesome gets up for two people or 200. Awesome writes great books even if no one is going to read them. Awesome sweeps the parts of store floors that no foot will ever touch. Awesome can’t help itself. Awesome has a huge heart. And that’s what it always plays to. The size of the crowd doesn’t matter. The applause of the audience doesn’t matter.
